چکیده

This paper presents a justiication of two qualitative counterparts of the expected utility criterion for decision under uncertainty, which only require bounded, linearly ordered, valuation sets for expressing uncertainty and preferences. This is carried out in the style of Savage, starting with a set of acts equipped with a complete preordering relation. Conditions on acts are given that imply a possibilistic representation of the decision-maker uncertainty. In this framework, pessimistic (i.e., uncertainty-averse) as well as optimistic attitudes can be explicitly captured. The approach thus proposes an operationally testable description of possibility theory.

Possibility Theory and Its Applications: Where Do We Stand?

December 19, 2011 Abstract This paper provides an overview of possibility theory, emphasizing its historical roots and its recent developments. Possibility theory lies at the crossroads between fuzzy sets, probability and non-monotonic reasoning. Possibility theory can be cast either in an ordinal or in a numerical setting. Qualitative possibility theory is closely related to belief revision th...

Possibilistic Decision Theory : From Theoretical Foundations to Influence Diagrams Methodology

The field of decision making is a multidisciplinary field in relation with several disciplines such as economics, operations research, etc.. Theory of expected utility has been proposed to model and solve decision problems. These theories have been questioned by several paradoxes (Allais, Ellsberg) who have shown the limits of its applicability. Moreover, the probabilistic framework used in the...

Probabilistic Reasoning in Decision Support Systems: From Computation to Common Sense

Most areas of engineering, science, and management use important tools based on probabilistic methods. The common thread of the entire spectrum of these tools is aiding in decision making under uncertainty: the choice of an interpretation of reality or the choice of a course of action. Although the importance of dealing with uncertainty in decision making is widely acknowledged, dissemination o...
